For the filling:
  • 8 cups of sliced apples
  • 1/4 cup of granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
For the topping:
  • 1 1/2 cups of old-fashioned oats
  • 3/4 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup of brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 12 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the sliced apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Pour the apple mixture into a large Dutch oven and spread it out evenly.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together the oats, flour, brown sugar, salt, and cinnamon until well combined.
  5. Pour the melted butter into the bowl with the dry ingredients and mix until everything is moistened and the mixture is crumbly.
  6. Spread the topping evenly over the apple mixture in the Dutch oven.
  7. Cover the Dutch oven with a lid and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  8. Remove the lid and continue baking for an additional 5-10 minutes, or until the topping is crispy and the filling is bubbling.
  9. Remove the Dutch oven from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  10. Serve the apple crisp warm, topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
