We've all tasted humble canned baked beans. But have you tasted the real thing? This is a recipe for the original fresh and homecooked version that is bursting with flavor and is a perfect side dish for any meal!

  • 1 pound dry navy beans, soaked overnight
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 cups of water
  • 1 pound bacon, diced
  • a beautiful Dutch oven
  1. Preheat your regular oven to 325°F.
  2. Drain the soaked navy beans and rinse them well.
  3. Combine the beans, chopped onion, ketchup, molasses, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, smoked paprika, garlic powder, black pepper, and water in your Dutch oven, and stir until it turns into a mixture.
  4. Add the diced bacon to the Dutch oven and stir to combine. Now you have a perfect flavor base. All you need to do is let the flavors unlock! Mmmm!
  5. Cover the Dutch oven with a lid and place it in the oven.
  6. Cook the beans for about 3 hours, stirring occasionally, until they are tender and the liquid has thickened. Resist the urge to eat them as they will smell amazing! Mmmm! (ok let's keep moving)
  7. Remove the Dutch oven from the regular oven and let it cool for a couple of minutes.
  8. Serve the baked beans hot, garnished with extra bacon or chopped fresh parsley, if desired. Delicious!
